A Complete Blood Count (CBC) analyzer is one of the most important investments a clinic or laboratory can make. It's also one of the most confusing to buy — dozens of models, wildly different prices, and lots of marketing noise.

Here's a simple framework to help you choose the right one.

1. Match the analyzer to your daily volume

The biggest mistake we see is clinics buying either way too much machine or way too little.

  • Under 20 samples/day: A semi-automated 3-part analyzer is usually enough. Lower cost, easier maintenance.
  • 20–60 samples/day: A fully automated 3-part or 5-part analyzer with autoloader makes sense.
  • Over 60 samples/day: Invest in a 5-part analyzer with a larger sample tray and higher throughput.

If you're near a boundary, go one size up. Analyzers age slowly, and you'll grow into it faster than you think.

2. Decide between 3-part and 5-part

A 3-part analyzer differentiates white blood cells into three groups: lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes.

A 5-part analyzer splits them into five: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.

For most general clinics, a 3-part is sufficient. For referral hospitals, oncology, or anything involving differential diagnosis, 5-part is worth the extra cost.

3. Check reagent availability

This is where many buyers get burned. A cheap analyzer with expensive or hard-to-source reagents becomes a very expensive paperweight.

Before you buy, ask:

  • Who supplies the reagents in Uganda?
  • What's the cost per test?
  • How fast can you get a new batch?

If the answer is vague, walk away.

4. Insist on training and support

A CBC analyzer is not a toaster. Your lab staff need hands-on training, and you need a support line that answers when something goes wrong at 9 PM on a Friday.

Ask every vendor:

  • Do you install the machine on-site?
  • Do you train our staff?
  • What's the warranty period?
  • What's the response time on repairs?

5. Get a written quote — and compare

Never buy on a verbal price. Get a written quote that covers:

  • The analyzer itself
  • Reagents and consumables (first 3 months at least)

  • Warranty terms
  • Service contract pricing after warranty

Then compare quotes like-for-like. Apples to apples.
